2026 (Current Status): Adults 21 and older may legally possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis and grow up to 6 plants per person (12 per household). Local governments retain the right to ban or restrict dispensaries within their jurisdiction.

2023 (November): Voters approve Issue 2 with about 57% support, legalizing the possession, home cultivation, and regulated retail sale of cannabis for adults 21 and older.

2023 (December): Possession and home cultivation become legal for adults, ahead of retail sales.
The Medical Marijuana Era: HB 523 (2016–2022)
Before recreational legalization, Ohio built a medical program that laid the regulatory groundwork for the industry.

2016: Governor John Kasich signs House Bill 523, establishing the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program for patients with qualifying conditions.
